As we enter the summer heatwave, there is a lot of talk about the increase in positive COVID-19 cases in New York State.
New York State is also experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, and today Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke about what the state plans to do to combat the increase in cases over the past month. .
Cuomo announced that 75 percent of New Yorkers have been vaccinated, while 25 percent have not. The 25 percent corresponds to about 3.5 million people, which is upper total population of 21 states.
Cuomo has warned people who have not yet received the vaccine that they must do so. More than 72 percent of new cases in the state are the highly contagious Delta variant, and only 0.15 percent of vaccinated New Yorkers have had a “breakthrough infection.”
There was more 1,900 new cases of COVID-19 in the state today, which is about six times more than it was just a month ago.
Cuomo urged those who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated today and said there was no “logical theory for reluctance to vaccinate now.”
While there was no discussion of reintroducing mask warrants, Cuomo said if the state didn’t move forward (getting people vaccinated) there would be more illnesses, infections and hospitalizations.
Cuomo too announcement that they will release $ 15 million in funds to six community organizations across the state to help increase immunization rates and target problematic postal codes.
Dr Thomas Russo of UB Jacobs School of Medicine said WKBW that if rates continue to rise in western New York and throughout New York, the mask warrant review will be back on the table.
Many are wondering if mask warrants will come back to the picture in New York City and while that has not happened, questions remain with rising infection rates.
