Next property tax installment due September 7

EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County Treasurer Chris Slusser reminds taxpayers that the second of four property tax bill installments are due Wednesday, Sept. 7.

“The Treasurer’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 5,” Slusser said.

He reminded taxpayers of all payment options: at a participating bank or credit union across the county, by mail, through a financial institution’s online bill-paying service, through Treasurer’s website at www.madcotreasurer.orgby phone at 1-844-919-4300, or in person at the Treasurer’s Office in Edwardsville.

If paid by post, letters must be postmarked no later than September 7.

“No penalties will be applied for payments mailed and postmarked by the due date,” Slusser said. “I would encourage taxpayers to take payment inside the post office to have it postmarked if they plan to send it on the actual due date. Mail collected from drop boxes is often not not stamped locally, but sent to a fulfillment center in St. Louis, which may take an extra day.

“Although the office of the treasurer serves as the county’s tax collector, it is important to remember that the office of the treasurer does not determine the amount that is billed,” he said. “Property tax bills are determined by four factors: assessment, equalization factor or ‘multiplier,’ tax rate, and any exemptions.”

Each year, taxpayers receive a bill that includes information about exactly where their tax money is being spent, upcoming due dates, and available payment options.
