My wife and I just bought a new house and we only need one or two more things to furnish the living room. Over the weekend we found a couch and loveseat that we both love for $3,000. The store owner said he would take 15% off the price if we got a credit card from the store and paid it that way. We are in pretty good financial shape and can afford to pay cash for the furniture, but how about taking advantage of the 15% off offer and then refunding the card immediately and closing the account ?
Playing with snakes is always a bad idea. Sooner or later, you’re going to get bitten.
Everyone thinks they’re the exception to the rule, or that they’re making money or getting rich doing stuff like that. It doesn’t work that way. So stop playing with debt products. This guy is just trying to hook you up and make more money.
Your idea may sound good on the surface to a lot of people, but the problem is that the vast majority of those same people don’t have the discipline to follow a plan like this. Having this account in store, even for a short time, would be too tempting. Another issue is that many places like this charge you a fee when you pay for the card. They’ll make you pay to death for other things too, if you’re not careful, until you end up wishing you never saw the place.
If it was me, I would talk to the owner again and let him know I’m taking my business somewhere else unless he puts 15% on the furniture on a cash purchase. There’s no way I’m pulling out a stupid credit card for a place like this, whether I have cash on hand or not!
