California kidnapping of person of interest in police custody after using missing victim’s credit card

California authorities have arrested a person of interest in an investigation into the kidnapping of a family of four, officials said Tuesday. The arrest came the day after officers located a truck belonging to one of the missing victims on fire outside Merced.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office announced that Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was arrested following a brief search instigated by him using one of the victim’s credit cards at an ATM in Atwater . The town of Atwater is located less than 10 miles from Merced.

“On October 4, 2022, Merced County Sheriff’s Detectives received a tip in the morning of October 4, 2022 that one of the victim’s ATM cards had been used at an ATM located at a bank in the city of Merced. ‘Atwater. Investigators have obtained a CCTV photo of a subject doing a banking transaction where the person appears to resemble the CCTV photo from the original abduction scene,’ the MCSO said in a statement.

The MCSO said Salgado was in critical condition when law enforcement located him attempting to kill himself.

Several law enforcement agencies continue to search for the four missing victims: Aroohi Dheri, 8 months, her parents – Jasleen Kaur, 27, and Jasdeep Singh, 36 – and her uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39. Police said all four were taken against their will at gunpoint.

“We continue to ask for the public’s assistance with any information that may help us locate the family,” the MCSO said.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Sheriff Vern Warnke added, “We don’t have any motivation behind this. We just know they’re gone.”

The arrest comes a day after Cal Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced “was dispatched to Buhach Road and Oakdale Road in Winton for a report of a burning vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Fire department authorities later identified the vehicle as Amandeep Singh’s black 2020 Dodge Ram truck.
